Scripture Text: Matthew 5: 33 – 37
Introduction
Fear and desire often propel us to lie.
Explanation
I. Taking an oath is a common practice in the Old Testament. The law demands that the person be true to any oath sworn.
II. The Jews and Pharisees during Jesus’ time often look for loopholes that will allow them to escape keeping an oath made.
III. Jesus teaches that one ought to sincere with their words with or without an oath.
Final Word
Be truthful and create an environment that promotes truthfulness.

1. Examine in the presence of God a recent lie you have told. Was it driven by fear or desire?
2. What are your motives or intentions when you make a promise or a vow?
3. In what other ways can you create an environment that promotes truthfulness?
