Introduction
* The Sermon on the Mount talks about how life is to be lived in the kingdom of God.
* The Beatitudes introduces Jesus’ sermon on the Mount.
The Beatitudes can be divided in 3 categories.
I. Those who depend on God (5: 3 – 6)
a. The Poor in Spirit (v. 3)
b. The mourners (v. 4)
c. The meek (v. 5)
d. The hungry and the thirsty (v. 6)
II. Those who live for God (5: 7-9)
a. The merciful (v. 7)
b. The pure in heart (v. 8)
c. The peacemakers (v. 9)
III. Those who are Persecuted (5: 10-12)
a. The persecuted (v.10)
b. The insulted and slandered (v. 11 – 12)
Questions
1. Recall the times in your life when you were deeply dependent upon God. How was God’s present in those moments.
2. How can we bring mercy and peace to the downtrodden as well as to alleviate their suffering.
3. How can we remain joyful when we are persecuted, insulted and slandered.
